How to Make Your Wig Last Longer

1. Rotate your units

A single wig worn every day will not last as long as two worn in rotation. Rest days let the hair recover from friction, product and heat.

2. Sleep in silk

Braid or twist the hair loosely and wear a silk or satin bonnet, or lay the wig on a stand overnight. Cotton pillowcases pull moisture out of the hair and rough up the cuticle, which is how matting starts at the nape.

3. Detangle daily, gently

Ends first, roots last, wide-tooth comb only. Two minutes each evening prevents the tangles that lead to shedding.

4. Keep the heat low

Use a heat protectant every time and stay under 350°F. Air dry when you can, and let the hair''s natural texture do the work instead of flat ironing a curly unit straight every week.

5. Be selective with product

Build-up is the enemy: heavy waxes and thick gels coat the strands and dull the hair. Use lightweight oils on the ends, edge control only at the perimeter, and a clarifying wash monthly.

6. Store it properly

On a wig stand or in a satin bag, never balled up in a drawer, and out of direct sunlight and humidity. Keep the lace protected while it is stored.

Know when to refresh

Even a well-cared-for unit eventually thins at the front. If the knots are lifting or the ends are permanently dry, a professional refresh — bleach, pluck, trim and deep condition — buys you months more wear.
